Lakeland Bank Staff Donate to Meals On Wheels

$3,000 raised to help senior citizens
OAK RIDGE, N.J., March 1, 2013 — Lakeland Bank staff members who participated in the Company’s monthly “Jeans Day” fundraiser, raised $3,000 in January to support the Meals On Wheels programs in the communities the Bank serves. Employees are permitted to wear jeans on Fridays in exchange for a charitable donation of $10 or more per month.
“The support our colleagues provide to an organization such as Meals On Wheels is a good example of how they give back to the community,” said Thomas J. Shara, chief executive officer of Lakeland Bank. “The efforts of Meals On Wheels to provide our homebound senior citizen population with a hot meal is an invaluable service for these individuals as well as the community.”
The donation will be split among Meals on Wheels programs in Bergen, Essex, Morris, Passaic, Sussex and Warren Counties and used to further their mission to provide nutritious meals and other supportive services to both the homebound and senior nutrition center participants.
“The Morris County Nutrition Project has been serving senor citizens in Morris County for over 40 years and last year served 512,966 meals to residents,” said Ophelia Cruse, nutrition project director of Morris County Dept. of Human Services. “Our program makes it possible for seniors to enjoy a hot nutritious meal with friends and neighbors at a congregate setting, but more importantly, it provides necessary meals to frail, elderly seniors so they can continue to stay in their homes.”
The mission of the Morris County Department of Human Services is to provide help and assistance to residents in need, from children to families to seniors. Services provided by the Department include financial and emergency assistance, access to mental health and substance abuse services, job training and support, prevention services for youth, support for veterans, transportation for elderly and disabled, meals on wheels and adult protective services for vulnerable adults at risk of abuse.
