Resolve To Improve Your Finances In 2011

By: Robert A. Vandenbergh

At the beginning of a year, we have the opportunity to review our finances and make adjustments for a fresh start. If you have spent too much and saved too little, making small tweaks to your budget will help you meet your financial goals.

As reported in The Miami Herald, statistics confirm that almost 97 percent of New Year's resolutions are never fulfilled. Even so, some 40 to 45 percent of people set goals and research shows that 46 percent make it past the six-month mark. [1]
For those who want to go the distance and resolve to improve financial stability, here are some tips to get started:
  • Compare spending versus earnings over the past 12 months.
  • Pay off credit card balances or transfer balances to cards with lower interest rates.
  • Contribute to a retirement plan.
  • Plan to save on a regular basis and stick to it.
  • Maximize employer benefits by reviewing 401(k), flexible spending accounts, medical and dental insurance, etc., to ensure that you are taking advantage of those that save you money by reducing taxes or out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Review insurance coverage and make sure that you have adequate life, disability, car, home and long-term coverage.etc.
  • Update your will.
  • Organize your files.
We wish you good health and good fortune in 2011.
